A tiny vertical Caribbean island with the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ highest point and a 400-metre commercial runway

Saba is a 13-square-kilometre volcanic island of steep slopes, four villages and a cloud-forest summit; the Saba National Marine Park protects the surrounding sea, while Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport has a 400-metre runway. Mount Scenery is the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Flights and ferries are weather-sensitive. The runway is the memorable oddity; the rest of the visit is steep terrain, including the Mount Scenery climb and the island’s village roads.

The largest natural asphalt lake on Earth

Pitch Lake is a self-replenishing asphalt deposit where petroleum seeps, evaporates and leaves bitumen at the surface. UNESCO’s tentative listing describes it as the largest pitch lake in the world.

It is more strange than conventionally scenic. Go with a guide who can explain the geology, extraction history, microbial life and why this 'lake' can be walked on.

Guinness-recognized brightest bioluminescent bay in the world

Mosquito Bay glows year-round. Its narrow mouth keeps dinoflagellates from washing out and its mangroves supply nutrients; Guinness records up to 700,000 dinoflagellates per gallon and lists it as the world's brightest bioluminescent bay.

Plan for a new or crescent moon and book a guided kayak tour. Brightness varies with moon phase and weather; swimming is not allowed and tours close around the full moon.

A modern capital buried by an active volcano, still inside a controlled exclusion zone

Montserrat’s 1995–2010 eruption buried Plymouth and forced the evacuation of the island’s south. Safe viewpoints show the buried town and the Soufrière Hills dome, while Zone V remains closed to the public.

Plymouth is closed to the public under the current hazard rules. Use viewpoints and the observatory instead, and check the Montserrat Volcano Observatory’s current hazard level before travelling.

A five-story castle filled with alien-themed art, Haitian and Dominican sculpture and outsider art

One of the world's deepest blue holes and the site of the Vertical Blue freediving competition

Dean's Blue Hole reaches 202 meters in a bay west of Clarence Town. Its depth has made it a site for freediving records and the Vertical Blue competition.

The beach and shallow water are accessible, but reaching the full depth requires specialist diving. Current English-language references call it the third deepest blue hole; older sources called it second, so 'among the deepest' is the durable claim.

Dominica’s volcanic interior, including the world’s second-largest boiling lake

Morne Trois Pitons puts several volcanic features in one park. Boiling Lake is a flooded fumarole reached through the Valley of Desolation, and the park also has fumaroles, hot springs, waterfalls and rainforest.

The Boiling Lake hike is strenuous and weather and geothermal conditions can change. A certified local guide is required; check with the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division before setting out and plan for a full mountain-and-geothermal day, not a casual viewpoint stop.

Sulphur Springs sits inside the collapsed Qualibou volcanic system, where visitors can drive into the geothermal field and walk among fumaroles, bubbling mud pools and sulphurous steam within Saint Lucia’s UNESCO-listed Pitons Management Area.

Saint Lucia’s tourism authority says it is often described as the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano; UNESCO identifies Sulphur Springs as a geothermal field within the Pitons Management Area. It is easy to reach and popular, with fewer visitors in the morning or late afternoon.

Four historic districts around a natural working harbor, with Dutch forms adapted to the Caribbean climate and trade

Lebedev's 2013 notes focus on Willemstad's bridge system and Dutch-style houses. The historic city grew around a natural harbor, with Dutch urban forms adapted to the Caribbean climate and architectural influences from Spanish and Portuguese colonial towns it traded with.

Cruise traffic is part of the city: Curaçao recorded 881,665 cruise passengers in 2025. Check the port schedule, then walk Punda and Otrobanda and look past the waterfront to Sint Anna Bay's active working harbor.

Oilbirds are the only nocturnal flying fruit-eating birds; the circuit adds scarlet ibis roosts and Tobago's 1776 Main Ridge Forest Reserve.

Trinidad's South American biology leaks into the Caribbean: oilbirds use echolocation in caves and Caroni Swamp turns red with scarlet ibis at dusk. UNESCO records Tobago's Main Ridge as the oldest legally protected forest reserve created specifically for conservation.

This works as a guided natural-history circuit, not one stop. A guide is required for the Dunston Cave and Oilbird Trail; Caroni boat departures and Tobago transport need current checking.

An extensive British fortress built into a steep volcanic hill, with the citadel spread across the upper slopes

Brimstone Hill's defenses follow the terrain. British engineers used a steep volcanic hill to protect the coast; enslaved African labor built the fortress within the sugar economy that made the island worth defending.

A historic centre that retains its original urban layout, five major plazas and a network of some of the oldest and largest stone fortifications in the Americas.

Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centres for ship-building.

Old Havana is an urban property, not a single ticketed attraction: its main plazas are walkable, but the fortifications extend across the bay. From-San Juan trip estimate: 5 days · $1,000. Assumes travel from San Juan: economy flights or regional rail/road links where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, entrance fees and a practical buffer for UNESCO-site access.

Compact Caribbean capital with the botanic gardens, Roseau River and coast in the centre and a UNESCO-listed volcanic park about 8 km east.

Lebedev's 2014 Dominica report calls Roseau the capital and notes its cruise-ship traffic. The city is a practical base for Morne Trois Pitons National Park, about 8 km east, and Dominica's mountainous interior.

Roseau is a working capital and cruise port, not a polished resort town. Cruise-ship days can crowd the waterfront; use it as a base for Dominica's interior rather than as a standalone city break.

From-San Juan trip estimate: 7 days · $1,800. Assumes travel from San Juan: flights/ferry to Dominica, Roseau or nearby lodging, meals, local transport and island weather buffer.

Haitian Vodou pilgrimage links African religious traditions with Catholic practice and Indigenous elements at sites such as Saut-d’Eau and Souvenance

Haitian Vodou developed among enslaved Africans in Saint-Domingue through African religious traditions, Catholic practice and Indigenous elements. The Open Encyclopedia of Anthropology describes a Vodou ceremony at Bois-Caïman in August 1791 before the general slave uprising. Saut-d’Eau draws pilgrims from July 14 to 16, while Lakou Souvenance near Gonaïves holds an Easter pilgrimage.

This is not casual festival tourism. The U.S. State Department’s July 10, 2026 advisory says do not travel to Haiti, and AP reported that Saut-d’Eau was under gang control during the July 2025 pilgrimage after attacks in March and April. Any visit would require local religious guidance and a fresh security assessment.

From-San Juan trip estimate: 7 days · $2,400. Assumes travel from San Juan: conditions allow travel, trusted local guide/driver, lodging, meals, pilgrimage-calendar timing and a large security/logistics buffer.
