226-metre single-drop waterfall with an unusual mix of height and volume

Kaieteur is a powerful, isolated single-drop fall pouring over the Guiana Shield into a forested gorge, with tiny golden frogs living in tank bromeliads nearby.

The park is remote, though visitation has grown to over 8,000 a year, according to the Protected Areas Commission. Flights can be delayed or cancelled by weather, while the overland route takes several days.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 6 days · $2,500. Assumes flights to Georgetown, a Kaieteur day flight, city lodging, meals, local transfers and a buffer day in case the small-plane trip shifts.

A huge multi-fall basalt-rim waterfall system

The physical layout is the point: a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Iguazú River breaks into hundreds of cascades along a basaltic rim, with subtropical Atlantic Forest around it.

The infrastructure is heavy, with timed entry, park roads and an ecological train to Garganta del Diablo on the Argentine side. The falls cover nearly three kilometres and sit within a remnant of Atlantic Forest.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 3 days · $750. Assumes direct flights to Puerto Iguazú, two hotel nights, meals, park tickets and local transfers.

Two major rivers run side by side before mixing

The dark Negro and sediment-heavy Solimões differ in temperature, velocity, density and water chemistry, so their boundary remains visible for several kilometres while the two waters mix into the Amazon downstream.

The color boundary is real, but complete mixing takes more than 30 hours and roughly 100 kilometres downstream.

A UNESCO-listed modern church built around Eladio Dieste’s reinforced-brick Gaussian vaults and undulating walls.

With its belfry and underground baptistery, the church sits in Estación Atlántida, 45 km from Montevideo. Inspired by Italian paleo-Christian and medieval religious architecture, the 1960 complex uses exposed reinforced brick for undulating walls and a roof of Gaussian vaults developed by Eladio Dieste.

Canelones lists year-round visits with weekday access and guided slots on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Its official pages show different weekday hours, so verify the current schedule before going.

Temperate ice fields, outlet glaciers, fjords and steppe

Perito Moreno is the accessible edge: a large outlet glacier visitors can watch from land while it calves into a lake. The larger reason is the Southern Patagonian Ice Field system, where temperate ice, fjords, mountains and wind-scoured steppe sit unusually close together.

The balconies are easy; understanding the place means seeing Perito Moreno as one visible outlet of a much larger ice system shared by Chile and Argentina.

UNESCO-listed pilgrimage complex with Aleijadinho's twelve soapstone prophets and six polychrome Passion chapels.

Construction began in 1757 in Minas Gerais, south of Belo Horizonte, and continued into the early 19th century. The complex has a church with an Italian-influenced Rococo interior, a stairway lined with twelve soapstone prophets and six chapels containing polychrome wooden scenes from the Stations of the Cross by Aleijadinho and his workshop.

This is an active pilgrimage site: services can restrict tourist circulation, and the September Jubilee draws a large crowd. Check the calendar and current hours before visiting.

A linked system of city walls, harbour forts and a colonial walled city, among the most extensive and complete military-fortification ensembles in South America.

Cartagena sits on a sheltered bay of the Caribbean Sea and has South America's most extensive and one of its most complete military-fortification systems. Inside the walls are Centro, with the cathedral and major colonial monuments; San Diego, once home to merchants and craftsmen; and Getsemaní, the former suburban quarter of artisans and enslaved people.

The historic centre's walls are free and open to the public. San Felipe is open daily 7 a.m.–6 p.m.; Bocachica's free forts are open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and require a boat from Muelle La Bodeguita. The operator warns about heat, steep ramps, stairs and slippery tunnels.

World's tallest uninterrupted waterfall dropping from a tepui

Angel Falls drops 979 meters from Auyán-tepui, high enough that much of the water turns to mist before it reaches the base. The draw is the whole Canaima mix of table mountains, rivers, lagoons and fly-in remoteness.

The visit is closer to a fly-in expedition than a normal waterfall stop. Most trips depend on flights to Canaima, seasonal river access, local operators and Venezuela conditions that can change quickly.

The park's mounds connect through terraces, paths and earthen causeways. Fuente de Lavapatas is a religious monument carved into a stream bed, and the wider site preserves ancient tracks, drainage ditches and artificial platforms.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 6 days · $1,600. Assumes flights via Bogotá to Neiva/Pitalito, road transfers, archaeological guiding, lodging and meals.

A four-century-old orthogonal Spanish colonial plan with parks, churches, two cathedrals facing one another and the Pumapungo archaeological site.

Cuenca sits in an Andean valley irrigated by four rivers. Founded in 1557 under the orthogonal planning rules issued by Charles V, it still keeps that grid after four centuries. Much of its architecture dates from the 18th century and was modernized during the 19th-century quinine and straw-hat export boom; the protected area also includes the Pumapungo archaeological site.

This is an inhabited historic district, not a single gated attraction. UNESCO counts more than 1,000 heritage buildings and says earthen structures are fragile; the municipality's visitor itinerary combines the centre with restoration sites. Check hours for individual churches, museums and Pumapungo before you go.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 6 days · $1,200. Assumes travel from Buenos Aires: economy flights or regional rail/road links where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, entrance fees and a practical buffer for UNESCO-site access.

Guiana Shield tepuis with more than 75,000 rock pictographs

The park combines Guiana Shield tepuis, Amazon rainforest and more than 75,000 rock pictographs linked to a purported jaguar cult and Indigenous sacred beliefs.

The park is a World Heritage site with no ecotourism. It protects Indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation, so the access restrictions are part of the site.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 6 days · $2,600. Assumes travel via Bogotá and San José del Guaviare for legal flyover-style access, lodging, guides, meals and regional transfers.

Spanish colonial river port with a sinuous riverside street, three riverfront plazas with churches and largely preserved 17th- to early 19th-century buildings still used for their original purposes.

Founded in 1540 on the Magdalena River, Mompox became a river port on the route between Cartagena and the interior during Spanish colonization. Its main street followed the river and worked as a dyke, while three riverside plazas grew around churches.

Mompox is a remote stop from Cartagena: direct buses take about 5–8 hours and the small airport has limited service. Visitor numbers rise during Easter and the Jazz Festival, while UNESCO notes flooding risks along La Albarrada.

Large intact, largely uninhabited tropical forest

The reserve covers 1.6 million hectares of primary forest on the Guiana Shield, with lowland and montane ecosystems and granite outcrops. It remains largely uninhabited and hard to reach, but logging encroachment and illegal hunting are growing threats.

It is a major detour. The reason to include it is intactness at scale, not visitor convenience.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 8 days · $3,200. Assumes multi-leg flights to Paramaribo, a Raleighvallen or Voltzberg-style nature reserve tour, local hotels, meals, transfers and weather/logistics buffer.

An underground ceremonial complex of an early Andean cult

Chavín's galleries, stone heads, drainage acoustics and Lanzón monolith show an early religious center using architecture to produce sensory effects.

The best parts are spatial and subterranean. It rewards a guide more than a quick walk-through.

Triassic fossil basin exposed in desert canyons

The adjoining parks preserve an unusually complete continental Triassic sequence: early dinosaurs, mammal ancestors, ancient river systems and red-rock canyons in the same geological story.

The rocks are a fossil archive of vertebrate evolution. The scenery is secondary.

UNESCO-listed urban heritage with earthen buildings and a largely preserved colonial layout shaped by local traditions, Spanish Mudéjar techniques and Dutch architectural patterns.

With its earthen constructions unique to the Caribbean, Coro is the only surviving example of a mix of local traditions with Spanish Mudéjar and Dutch architectural techniques.

The property has been on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger since 2005, with UNESCO's 2025 review still listing flooding and serious deterioration of materials and structures. The U.S. State Department rates Venezuela Level 3 (reconsider travel), so verify transport, security and site conditions before planning a visit.

Rock art and debates over early peopling

Hundreds of shelters preserve dense rock art scenes in semi-arid caatinga. The park is also tied to long-running debates about how early humans reached and occupied the Americas.

The park is spread across several circuits; seeing many shelters and panels takes time, and claims about early settlement remain debated.

Plautdietsch-speaking agricultural colonies in dry Chaco scrub

Filadelfia and the nearby colonies pair Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonite communities with cooperative cattle and dairy production in the hot, semi-arid Chaco. Their museums cover migration, farming and the colonies' relationships with Indigenous communities.

Visit respectfully and arrange any Indigenous-community visit through an accredited guide. Mennonite settlement and ranching are tied to land dispossession, deforestation and continuing pressure on Indigenous territories in the Chaco.

Buenos Aires trip estimate: 4 days · $900. Assumes flights to Asunción, overland travel to Filadelfia, simple-to-midrange lodging, meals, local museum/colony visits and road transfers.

Six surviving mission towns whose churches adapt European Christian architecture to local traditions; San José is the stone-built exception.

Between 1696 and 1760, Jesuits founded six reducciones in eastern Bolivia. Their churches adapt Catholic architecture to local traditions, and the surviving missions at San Francisco Javier, Concepción, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael and San José remain living heritage in Chiquitanía.

Treat it as a multi-day circuit, not a single stop: public transport beyond San Ignacio is sparse, roads can be rough or under construction and some churches may be locked until a local keyholder arrives. Check road conditions, church and museum hours and festival dates before leaving Santa Cruz.
