Where to see the 2027 eclipse

Start with Tunisia for 5m40s of totality, favorable weather, and manageable heat. Compare Luxor for longer totality or the other destinations below.

Where to stand

Tunisia’s longest totality, about 5 minutes 45 seconds, sits in the Chaffar area of Sfax governorate (local press citing the national weather service, Apr 2026). Sfax city is ~5m 39–41s near 10:11 local with the sun ~56° up.

Sleep in Sfax. Drive 30–40 km south on GP1 to view. If coastal haze shows up, escape west/NW on RN1 (Bir Ali Ben Khalifa / Agareb) inside the ≥5-minute band—not south toward Gabès.

Indicative totality (total eclipse, in-scope durations)
Place Totality Role
Chaffar–Mahares strip ~5m 44–45s Centerline; Tunisian maximum
Sfax city ~5m 39–41s Hotel base; drive south
Inland Sfax (RN1 west) ≥5m on-band Haze escape; stay ≥5m

Weather and odds

WeatherSpark Aug 2 (Sfax): clearer skies ~95% of the time; at totality (~10:11) expect ~30 °C (daily high ~32 °C). That is the comfort default vs Luxor’s ~38 °C afternoon. It can feel a bit humid—still far easier than Upper Egypt dry heat.

Leftover risks WeatherSpark underplays: hot desert wind, thin coastal haze, and rare dust. A short drive west on RN1 inside the ≥5-minute band is the cheap haze fix.

WeatherSpark Aug 2 (Sfax) edges Luxor on usual cloud (~95% vs ~92%) and wins hard on comfort (~30 °C vs ~38 °C). Tunisia alone is still not a guarantee.

  1. Usual Sfax sky + comfort (WeatherSpark) ~95% / ~30°C

Typical 2 Aug clearer skies + mild morning at totality.

  2. Drive inland if the coast is hazy Helps sometimes

Useful on a minority of mornings for haze/low cloud—not a jump to “basically guaranteed.”

  3. Via Istanbul plan (dust exit) ~95.5–97.8%

Whole plan ~95.5–97.8% for ≥4 clear minutes. Pick the cleaner country from IST by ~30 Jul.

Take Tunisia when Egypt is dusty, when both look clean and you want comfort, or when you want open roads at 5m40s+ without Luxor heat.

The working plan

From Istanbul: IST→TUN (~4–7 nonstops/day now on TK/TU/BJ; 2027 counts not locked; no SAW substitute), then ~270 km on the A1 to Sfax (~3–3.5h). Land 30–31 Jul for a scouting day. Tunisia-only: fly TUN (DJE/NBE only with slack to Sfax); skip domestic turboprops on eclipse week.

Primary

Sfax hotel + rental car. View from Chaffar Beach or GP1 mid-corridor; Mahares as fallback. Get there early; tours aim at the same dirt.

Escape corridor

West/NW on RN1 and local public roads inside the ≥5-minute Sfax-governorate band (Bir Ali Ben Khalifa ~61 km). 40–80 km in the last 2–3 hours is realistic.

Tours

Fine for logistics. Cap Astro’s day-of choice is between Tunisian sites, not a late hop to Egypt.

National coordination committee launched 16 Apr 2026; as of Aug 2026 no published Chaffar/Mahares access, closure, or parking rules. Scout day still earns its keep. Recheck through spring 2027.

What to book

Flights

  • Turkish Airlines SEA→IST ~26 Jul; refundable cash or Miles&Smiles / Aeroplan
  • Flex IST→TUN ~30 Jul (prefer TU/BJ if TK already covers SEA–IST); IST only — no SAW→TUN
  • Tunisia-only trip: fly into TUN; DJE/NBE only if the drive still lands you in Sfax with slack

Hotels

  • Two free-cancel Sfax rooms before leaving Turkey: ibis Sfax + Borj Dhiafa (alt Les Oliviers Palace)
  • Planning ceiling was ~$150/night; live refundable quotes nearer ~$82–111 — do not rely on a single hold in a thin market

Cars / drivers

  • Free-cancel Camel (DiscoverCars) or Avis at Tunis airport for the A1 → Sfax drive
  • Passport + Czech/EU national licence + green card usually suffice; soft IDP optional

Other

  • Czech citizens visa-free ≤90 days (passport only — Czech ID invalid for entry since 2025)
  • Hard currency for the closed dinar; local SIM/eSIM on arrival
  • Scout Chaffar / Mahares / GP1 pull-offs on Jubier the day before while you still have slack

Egypt vs Tunisia call from Istanbul about 5–3 days before the eclipse; Tunisia has ~24h more flight slack than same-day Luxor.

Week before the eclipse

Totality around 10:11 local. Be set up by ~09:30. Stop driving by ~09:15.

  • ~3 to 2 days out: compare Tunisia vs Luxor on cloud and dust forecasts.
  • Day before: coast vs RN1 inland inside the ≥5-minute band.
  • Eclipse morning: if the coast looks hazy, drive west on-band.

Buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival. Mobility without maps is cosplay.

Failure modes

  • Treating WeatherSpark’s ~95% as a trip-success rate after haze, dust, and logistics.
  • One Sfax hotel hold in a thin market.
  • Domestic flights to Sfax on eclipse week.
  • Closed dinar without cash; drones without paperwork.

Recheck before you book hard

  • July 2027 flight schedules, operating carriers, and refund rules.
  • Entry rules for Egypt and Tunisia, plus any Luxor or Sfax eclipse access restrictions.
  • Exact viewing coordinates, cancellation deadlines, and live cloud and dust forecasts.
