The memory filter groups GB and GiB into approximate tiers. CPU core counts across vendors and cloud vCPUs are not performance equivalents. Cloud service tax, AI fees, peripherals, backups and a UPS are excluded.
Hosted models run elsewhere. Local memory goes to your development tools and workloads, especially containers and parallel builds.
These are buying recommendations. Check memory pressure and swap during a busy session to estimate your own requirement.
For code, tests and a few containers, with most browsers and desktop tools on your laptop.
Worth considering at a discount if you can limit how many large workloads run together.
Our recommendation for several active projects. Large VMs or datasets may need more.
A home machine suits daily use, particularly if you need macOS. A VPS avoids reliance on your home power and internet. EC2 lets you pay for occasional compute, though storage still costs money while the instance is stopped.
Use Ethernet, backups and a UPS. Set up remote access and automatic restart after a power failure, then test recovery.
Check its region and billing terms. Shared CPU performance varies with other tenants. Linux servers cannot run native Mac apps.
