The Dead Sea shore is the lowest land-based elevation on Earth and its water is so saline that bathers float easily.

The Dead Sea is ranked for topography and chemistry: a shrinking terminal lake far below sea level, dense with salt and framed by sinkholes, cliffs and desert.

Jordan has managed beaches and public facilities, but the shoreline is changing. The lake is dropping roughly a metre a year and sinkholes are increasing, so use designated facilities and check current travel advice.

Built in 1228–29 under the Mengücekids, the complex pairs Ahmet Shah's mosque with Turan Melek's adjoining hospital. The mosque has a single prayer hall and two cupolas, while the portals carry distinct carved designs.

The complex reopened after a major restoration on 6 May 2024; a May 2025 report counted 72,000 visitors since reopening. Divriği is about 150 km from Sivas, so check current hours and prayer-time restrictions before going.

An isolated Gondwanan island fragment with dragon's blood trees and extreme endemism

Socotra sits first because its dragon's blood trees, bottle trees, limestone plateaus, freshwater wadis and endemic reptiles and snails evolved in near-total isolation for millions of years.

Current access is through operator-arranged flights, mainly via Jeddah; the Abu Dhabi route was suspended in January 2026. Local operators handle the Yemeni entry permit, and organized trips generally run from October to April because the summer monsoon disrupts flights and sea travel. At its centre, the Al-Ibrahimi Mosque/Tomb of the Patriarchs occupies a compound built in the 1st century AD around the traditional tombs of Abraham/Ibrahim and his family. The site is sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Travel conditions are changeable: the West Bank has checkpoints and road closures, and FCDO identifies the H2 area around Ash-Shuhada Street and the Ibrahimi Mosque as a closed military zone. Check current travel advice and local access rules before planning a visit.

One of Iran's most complete traditional commercial and cultural complexes, with interconnected covered brick structures still functioning as a market

Tabriz has been a place of cultural exchange since antiquity and its historic bazaar complex is one of the most important commercial centres on the Silk Road. The complex consists of interconnected covered brick structures, buildings and enclosed spaces for commercial, social, educational and religious functions.

Tabriz is walkable once you are there, but the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Iran and warns of arrest and detention. If travel becomes viable, check bazaar hours, national holidays, restoration closures and photography rules before planning around it.

A reed-wetland culture tied to ancient Mesopotamia, with portions of the marshes reflooded after catastrophic 20th-century drainage

Reed channels, mashoof canoes and water buffalo are part of daily life in the marshes. Mudhif guest houses use a reed-building tradition that UNESCO lists as intangible heritage.

Visa rules and local access arrangements need fresh checks: US advice says do not travel to Iraq and UK advice treats Dhi Qar as essential-travel-only. Recent rain improved water levels, but drought, checkpoint logistics and future inflows remain concerns.

UNESCO-listed fortified town with about 86 mosques, narrow alleys and Tihama courtyard-house architecture

Zabid's circular fortified plan, narrow alleys and domestic and military architecture show the spatial form of an early Islamic town. It was Yemen's capital from the 13th to 15th centuries and an important centre of Islamic learning, with students arriving from across the world.

Do not treat Zabid as a normal tourism stop: the UK FCDO advises against all travel to Yemen and the U.S. State Department rates Yemen Level 4, "Do not travel". UNESCO's 2025 state-of-conservation report says the town remains on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

UNESCO-listed religious heritage with preserved cultural fabric

Built between the beginning of the 16th century and the end of the 18th century, this Sufi retreat uses traditional Iranian architectural forms to fit a library, mosque, school, mausolea, cistern, hospital, kitchens, bakery and offices into the available space. The route to the shrine has seven segments and eight gates. The segments correspond to the seven stages of Sufi mysticism and the gates to the eight attitudes of Sufism.

UNESCO status does not make it effortless: check opening hours, restoration closures, crowd patterns and local access rules before building a trip around it.

UNESCO-listed working mountain railway, 1,394 km long, with 174 large bridges, 186 smaller bridges, 224 tunnels including 11 spiral tunnels and 89 stations.

The railway is a working 1,394-kilometre route built from 1927 to 1938, carrying trains between the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf through two mountain ranges and four climate zones. The engineering is the point: 174 large bridges, 186 smaller bridges and 224 tunnels, including 11 spiral tunnels.

The line is a working railway, not a single visitor attraction. The UK FCDO currently advises against all travel to Iran and reports that railways and other infrastructure may be affected by regional tensions; verify visa rules, train schedules, border status and local conditions before planning.

A living cultural landscape where steep-slope villages and dry-stone terraces remain tied to Hawrami seasonal migration.

Steep-slope villages, dry-stone terraces and seasonal livestock movement show how the Hawrami people adapted agropastoral life to the Zagros; UNESCO dates their presence here to about 3000 BCE.

This remote property spans two valleys and 106,307 hectares, so it is a regional trip rather than a single attraction; check current local access and Iran travel advice before going.

A living system of dry-stone terraces, channels fed by underground sources and traditional water sharing among Battir families

Battir's irrigation channels still divide water among village families. Dry-stone terraces hold irrigated vegetable plots, olive trees and grapevines in the valleys southwest of Jerusalem.

UNESCO retained Battir on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2025, citing construction, settlement outposts and damage to agricultural land. The U.S. State Department's 27 February 2026 advisory says to reconsider travel to the West Bank; checkpoints and local access can change without notice.
