The world’s largest Buddhist temple monument

Borobudur is a stone mandala built as a mountain, with terraces, relief panels, stupas and a ritual walking route.

Temple-structure visits use timed, guide-led tickets and provided Upanat sandals. Daily quotas limit the structure, but the wider complex can still be busy, especially on holidays.

Tiny endemic tarsiers paired with more than a thousand seasonal brown cone hills

Bohol puts two very different oddities on the same straightforward day-tour route: the Philippine tarsier, a small endemic primate, and the Chocolate Hills, about 1,776 near-symmetrical coral-limestone cones that turn brown in the dry season.

Use the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella rather than roadside enclosures. The circuit is mainstream rather than adventurous.

The world's largest known cave chamber in a park with at least 295 km of explored caves

Mulu's Sarawak Chamber is the headline, but the park also has Deer Cave, Clearwater Cave, sharp limestone pinnacles and a bat exodus from Deer Cave on most evenings.

The show caves are easy; Sarawak Chamber itself is an advanced caving objective requiring approval, fitness and prior wild-caving experience.

The Coral Triangle's coral-diversity bullseye

Raja Ampat is the Coral Triangle's coral-diversity bullseye: the archipelago has 553 coral species and more than 1,500 reef-fish species. The experience is distributed across reefs and islands, so time in the water matters more than a single landmark.

October to April is the usual diving window; mid-October to mid-December has the best chance of calm weather. Canada's current advisory excludes Raja Ampat Regency and Sorong from its avoid-non-essential-travel warning for Indonesian Papua, but check security advice and sea conditions before booking.

One of the largest active river-cave passages on Earth

Tham Khoun Xe carries the Xe Bang Fai through a navigable limestone passage averaging roughly 76 meters wide and 53 to 56 meters high. Village boatmen run the standard lower-cave tours while longer kayak expeditions go deeper when water levels permit.

Enter in the dry season, normally from mid-November through May. The park advises against cave entry from June to October because high flows are dangerous; road access is harder in the wet season, although boats can reach Nong Ping year-round.

A mixed UNESCO World Heritage property where tower-karst landforms shaped over five million years surround caves with archaeological traces of human occupation spanning more than 30,000 years

The main ecotourism area uses fixed boat routes and the management board lists tickets at VND 300,000 for adults and VND 150,000 for children. Trang An received more than 6 million visitors in 2025, so start early and check the management board for route closures or ticket changes.

The cultural landscape of Bali consists of five rice terraces and their water temples that cover 19,500 ha. The temples are the focus of a cooperative water management system of canals and weirs, known as subak, that dates back to the 9th century.

Six-kilometre north-south axis linking Mount Merapi, the Kraton and the Indian Ocean through monuments connected by Javanese rituals.

The central axis of Yogyakarta was established in the 18th century by Sultan Mangkubumi, and has continued from that time as a centre of government and Javanese cultural traditions.

This is a six-kilometre urban route rather than one attraction: Kraton museum units have separate hours and ticket counters, and the palace requires modest clothing. Malioboro and the Kraton area can fill with domestic tourist groups during holiday periods, so check each unit before you go.

UNESCO-listed British tropical colonial botanic garden with a well-preserved landscape design, historic plantings and buildings that show its development since 1859.

Its preserved layout, plantings and buildings show the shift from a British colonial pleasure garden to an economic garden for horticultural research and then to a modern botanic garden. Since the 19th century, it has been a centre for tropical botany and plant conservation in Southeast Asia, including the research and cultivation that helped spread plantation rubber.

The main gardens are free and open from 5am to midnight, but attractions have separate hours and routine maintenance or bad weather can close some areas. The National Orchid Garden charges admission; check the official notices page before you go.

Two complementary historic city centres with multicultural architecture, religious buildings and living traditions shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences.

Melaka and George Town developed as trading ports through roughly 500 years of exchange between East and West. Melaka's government buildings, churches, squares and fortifications reflect its 15th-century Malay sultanate and later Portuguese and Dutch periods; George Town's residential and commercial buildings reflect the British period from the late 18th century.

Tourism and infrastructure have put pressure on conservation, according to UNESCO's case study; Penang state recorded 8.76 million hotel guests in 2025. Check museum hours, event dates and traffic restrictions, and plan separate stops for Melaka and George Town.

A visitor-accessible volcano where sulfur gases ignite into blue flames at night

Indonesia Travel says the blue flames come from sulfuric gases that ignite on contact with oxygen and are visible only at night, usually between 2 and 4 a.m. The site sits beside an acidic crater lake and an active sulfur-mining area.

Sulfur dioxide levels vary with wind and location, so a proper gas mask and local instructions matter. This is not blue lava, and park access can close when conditions are unsafe.

Remote Khmer imperial sites outside the Angkor core

Preah Vihear's cliff-top axis and Koh Ker's brief imperial-capital pyramid landscape are the most distinctive Angkor outliers, but their value is inseparable from current access risk.

Shwedagon and the colonial street grid sit inside a city of 5.21 million people. The U.S. and Australian do-not-travel advisories make this an unusual large-city stop for Western leisure travelers.

Yangon clears the million-person cutoff. Shwedagon and the colonial downtown give it a clear focus. Lebedev's 2013 account calls Rangoon an "excellent" and "superb" place and describes straight streets, greenery, close-set houses and improvised wiring.
