Load-bearing bridges grown from living rubber fig (Ficus elastica) roots

Khasi and Jaintia communities guide aerial roots of rubber fig trees across streams, often using bamboo or areca trunks as temporary scaffolds. The roots inosculate and thicken as the trees grow, producing bridges that can last for centuries in Meghalaya's extreme-rainfall hills.

The Nongriat double-decker bridge takes a hard descent and climb from Tyrna; Meghalaya Tourism recommends October to March for drier trekking, while heavy rain brings slippery steps and landslide risk.
