A coastal park where rainforest, lagoon, savanna and beach meet, with wildlife crossing between them

Loango puts forest, lagoon, savanna and beach in one park. Elephants and buffalo can reach the beach, while hippos are more often seen in lagoons and rivers than in the surf.

Season matters: the rainy months from October to April are the better window for elephants and buffalo on the beach, while humpback whales visit from mid-July to mid-September. Access still involves a long road or track transfer and a boat.

From-Kinshasa trip estimate: 6 days · $1,900. Assumes travel from Kinshasa via N’djili (FIH), with economy flights where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, required fees and a realistic buffer for weather or permits.

A rainforest-savanna interface with mandrills and deep human history

Lopé combines mandrill groups, forest-savanna edges and archaeological traces of long human presence.

Train delays and guides matter; the park is not a simple safari loop.

A mineral-rich forest clearing where large numbers of forest elephants gather

Dzanga Bai lets visitors watch forest elephants and forest buffalo from a platform in an open clearing inside dense Congo Basin forest.

Access is logistically hard, and the U.S. State Department advises against travel to the Central African Republic.

A sandstone massif of natural arches, gueltas and one of the Sahara's largest rock-art ensembles

Ennedi combines natural arches, gueltas with permanent or semi-permanent water, West African crocodiles at Guelta d'Archei and thousands of rock-art images.

Australia's Smartraveller advises against travel to Chad and says road travel throughout the country is dangerous. Treat Ennedi as a 4x4 expedition and check visa, security and local access conditions before you plan a trip.

From-Kinshasa trip estimate: 9 days · $2,800. Assumes travel from Kinshasa via N’djili (FIH), with economy flights where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, required fees and a realistic buffer for weather or permits.

A mixed UNESCO World Heritage property with one of the Sahara's largest rock-art ensembles, including more than 900 sites spanning about 7,000 years

In northeast Chad, water and wind cut the sandstone into canyons, cliffs, natural arches and pitons; caves, canyons and shelters hold thousands of painted and carved images.

The U.S. State Department lists Chad at Level 4 with a do-not-travel advisory: rural roads usually require 4WD, landmines affect Ennedi-Est and Ennedi-Ouest and emergency care is limited.

From-Kinshasa trip estimate: 6 days · $1,200. Assumes travel from Kinshasa: economy flights or regional rail/road links where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, entrance fees and a practical buffer for UNESCO-site access.

A mixed World Heritage site where relict savanna, rainforest and about 1,800 petroglyphs occupy the same Ogooué valley corridor

The site puts a rainforest–savanna transition, endangered forest mammals and archaeological remains from the Palaeolithic through the Iron Age in one protected area, with about 1,800 petroglyphs.

The railway and highway reach the Ogooué corridor, but park visits still depend on local transport and guides. UNESCO reported abandoned villages and damaged infrastructure during a December 2024 consultation, so verify current lodging and access arrangements.

From-Kinshasa trip estimate: 6 days · $1,200. Assumes travel from Kinshasa: economy flights or regional rail/road links where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, entrance fees and a practical buffer for UNESCO-site access.

Africa’s oldest national park with gorillas, volcanoes and Rift Valley lakes

Virunga is ranked for ecological compression: mountain gorillas, active volcanoes, savanna, forest and lake edges in one park.

Gorilla and Nyiragongo treks are closed until further notice. Security conditions have caused repeated tourism suspensions, so check Virunga’s official visitor notice before planning.

A Congo Basin forest reserve created for okapi habitat

The reserve protects about 5,000 okapis, one-fifth of the Ituri Forest and 101 mammal species.

Armed conflict and illegal mining complicate travel and conservation work. Treat this as a conservation site, not a normal safari stop.

A steep stratovolcano whose 1.2-km summit crater has repeatedly held a large lava lake

Nyiragongo combines a steep climb above Goma with a summit crater that has repeatedly held a lava lake; the May 2021 eruption drained it and a new lake was observed by September 2021.

Virunga lists Nyiragongo treks as closed until further notice. Security conditions in North Kivu can change access quickly.

A UNESCO-listed complex of three contiguous national parks in the Congo Basin

Three national parks across Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Congo protect connected lowland forest, forest clearings and habitat for elephants and gorillas; Indigenous communities use the wider landscape.

Access is remote and guided; visas, transfers and security conditions vary by country, and Mbeli Baï is closed to visitors until early 2028.

From-Kinshasa trip estimate: 7 days · $2,300. Assumes travel from Kinshasa via N’djili (FIH), with economy flights where needed, midrange lodging, meals, local transfers, required fees and a realistic buffer for weather or permits.
