One of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheatres outside Italy

El Jem belongs on the North Africa page because the amphitheatre is a near-Colosseum-scale Roman arena standing in a small Tunisian town, and Lakeman calls it easily the best amphitheater on earth beside Rome’s Colosseum.

It is easy to visit between Sfax and Sousse. The surrounding town is ordinary; the amphitheatre is the reason for the stop.

The Great Pyramid, the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, shares the plateau with two other 4th-Dynasty royal pyramids, their temples and causeways, and the Sphinx.

The world's most important fossil site for documenting whales' transition from land mammals to ocean-going mammals

Wadi al-Hitan contains hundreds of early whale skeletons in desert sediments, including forms with vestigial hind legs. Many fossils remain in their desert setting, while more specimens are displayed in the site's small underground museum.

From Cairo, allow about three hours by road; from Faiyum, the drive is under 1.5 hours. Visits use prearranged guided routes in the protected area, so use a driver or operator.

Tree-climbing goats are strongly associated with southwestern Morocco, where argan trees provide fruit and leaves for browsing.

Goats climb argan trees for fruit and leaves; some roadside herders also put them in trees for tourist tips.

Rock-cut temples dismantled into more than 1,000 blocks and reassembled 64 metres above their original site

Abu Simbel is an ancient monument relocated by a modern salvage project: the temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari were cut into blocks and reassembled above Lake Nasser during the Aswan High Dam campaign.

It is far from Luxor and about 280 km from Aswan. Road tours leave around 4–5 am to beat the heat and mid-morning crowds.

One of the world’s longest and heaviest trains crossing 700 km of open Sahara

The SNIM railway is a working freight line, not a tourist train: it moves iron ore from Zouérat to Nouadhibou and carries local passengers and goods through the Sahara.

Open-wagon riding is not generally authorized for independent tourists; licensed operators may arrange permission. The line briefly enters the Polisario-controlled part of Western Sahara, and the U.S. advisory warns that landmines remain a danger along this border. Expect iron-ore dust, cold nights and delays.

The Ribat, Great Mosque, Bou Ftata Mosque, Kasbah and ramparts preserve an Aghlabid-era coastal defense plan; UNESCO calls Sousse and Monastir the unique surviving prototype of this military architecture from the first centuries of Islam.

The medina itself is an open urban quarter, but its monuments and museums have separate visiting arrangements. Check current hours, entrance fees and conservation work before planning around a specific stop.

One of Morocco's smallest medinas, with a largely intact urban fabric and clear Andalusian influence.

Tétouan linked Morocco and Andalusia during the Islamic period from the 8th century onwards. After the Reconquest, Andalusian refugees rebuilt the town, and its art and architecture retain clear Andalusian influence.

The medina is a working urban district with homes, commercial streets and artisan areas, not a single ticketed attraction. Museums and workshops have separate opening hours, while UNESCO lists the ramparts and gates among its conservation priorities.

An urban ensemble that pairs a planned 20th-century capital with a 12th-century medina, Almohad ramparts and 17th-century Andalusian remains.

Rabat lies on Morocco's north-west Atlantic coast. The UNESCO property combines the medina and Almohad ramparts with the new town planned under the French Protectorate from 1912 to the 1930s, including royal, administrative, residential and commercial districts.

UNESCO status does not make it effortless: check opening hours, restoration closures, crowd patterns and local access rules before building a trip around it.

Matmata’s houses invert the usual village: rooms are dug into the earth around open courtyards, keeping interiors sheltered from southern Tunisia’s heat. Hotel Sidi Driss was used as a Star Wars filming location.

Some inhabited homes accept visitors for tips, but the dwellings are scattered: many are visible from the main road while others require off-roading. Some are abandoned or converted to shops and cafés.

Leptis Magna has some of North Africa’s most complete Roman ruins; Sabratha retains a major coastal theatre, and both see little ordinary tourist traffic.

Leptis Magna preserves a Roman port, market, forums, theatres and amphitheatre; Sabratha is known for its theatre and coastal ruins. Both are visited within Libya’s tightly controlled tour system.

Elevated risk. Independent travel is not realistic; use a registered local operator, sponsor-arranged visa and local guide. Tourist itineraries are pre-arranged and accompanied by local police.

Living Saharan library culture beside desert-swallowed caravan architecture

Chinguetti’s family manuscript libraries and Ouadane’s ruined caravan fabric preserve a medieval intellectual and trading world still being reclaimed by sand.

Difficult but standard on the Adrar circuit with a guide. Expect minimal connectivity and long desert drives.

An unusual border quadrilateral that neither Egypt nor Sudan claims under its preferred boundary

Bir Tawil is a 2,060 km² quadrilateral between Egypt and Sudan that neither state claims under its preferred border line. The appeal is political geography, but reaching it requires permission and a remote desert expedition.

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Bir Tawil. Local leaders turned back a 2022 expedition after rejecting entry, so internet micronation claims are not travel advice.
