The world's largest curtain of falling water by combined width and height

Victoria Falls is less about a single viewpoint than a river suddenly dropping into a narrow basalt gorge system.

Spray season and low-water season feel like different places.

The world's largest intact inland delta floods during Botswana's dry season

The Okavango's Angolan flood pulse travels about 1,200 km and peaks in Botswana's dry winter, swelling a desert delta just as the surrounding Kalahari dries out.

Camp location and flood level determine whether the experience is water-based, land-based or both.

The world's only coastal desert with extensive dune fields influenced by fog

The Namib combines ancient dunes, Atlantic fog ecology, star dunes and Deadvlei's dead camelthorn trees; long-distance sand transport and fog-dependent life are the unusual parts.

Stay inside or near the Sesriem gate if sunrise matters: Sossusvlei is 60 km from the campsite; the NWR Deadvlei shuttle departs from Sesriem.

Earth's largest confirmed impact structure and one of its oldest

Vredefort is ranked for planetary scale: a 2-billion-year-old astrobleme so eroded that the visible trip is a guided geology problem rather than a simple crater view.

The feature is not obvious without context, so hire a geology guide or pair it with Parys and the interpretive sites.

A remote volcanic island tied to Napoleon’s exile and long pre-airport isolation

Jamestown’s preserved East India Company buildings, steep volcanic interior, endemic species and Napoleon’s exile all sit on one isolated Atlantic island. Lebedev’s travel report gives Saint Helena its own entry.

The airport made access easier, but schedules remain thin. Build in slack for weather and limited services.

Madagascar's dry ecoregion with the highest percentage of endemic plants

Cactus-like Didiereaceae and baobabs define the drought-adapted vegetation. The ecoregion also has endemic lemurs, tortoises and birds, including Grandidier's mongoose, which is restricted to the Tsimanampetsotsa limestone plateau.

Reserves are scattered and many roads are rough. April to November is the practical travel window.

A concentrated stand of endemic Grandidier's baobabs

The avenue is a compact stop near Morondava where Madagascar's endemic Grandidier's baobabs are easy to see; west-coast itineraries often pair it with Tsingy de Bemaraha.

Sunset brings the crowds, while deforestation, fire and poor natural regeneration threaten the protected area, so treat it as a short stop rather than the whole reason to cross Madagascar.

Lake Malawi's rocky shallows hold hundreds of cichlid species, nearly all endemic to the lake. Snorkeling puts the brightly coloured mbuna in view, while their rapid adaptive radiation happened in these isolated waters.
