A mountain fortress with cave shelters, summit settlements and oral traditions tied to Mauritian maroonage

The steep cliffs and caves of Le Morne Brabant sheltered maroons, or people who escaped slavery, during the 18th and early 19th centuries. UNESCO documents physical and oral evidence of their settlements.

The Heritage Trust Fund lists daily mountain hours of 07:00–16:00 and a latest hiking start at 14:30. Check its site for closure notices before setting out.

A Swahili town continuously inhabited for more than 700 years and shaped by Indian Ocean trade

Coral-stone houses, carved wooden doors and narrow lanes show the Swahili town plan. Dhows and seasonal monsoon winds linked Lamu to Indian Ocean trade.

FCDO advises flying to Lamu Airport on Manda Island, not travelling by road. The 2025 Lamu Cultural Festival was projected to draw 20,000–30,000 visitors; dress conservatively in town.

UNESCO-listed historic place with preserved cultural fabric

The Stone Town of Zanzibar is a fine example of the Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa. It retains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains buildings from a Swahili trading culture shaped by Africa, the Arab region, India and Europe over more than a millennium.

Stone Town is still a living commercial and residential district, but tourism pressure is converting homes into hotels, restaurants and commercial spaces, while heritage buildings undergo restoration.

A remote raised coral atoll with the world's largest giant tortoise population and minimal human impact

Aldabra combines a shallow lagoon, the world's largest giant tortoise population and active coral-atoll evolution with limited human interference.

There are no airstrips, harbours, jetties or helipads, and visits require a live-aboard vessel plus prior SIF authorisation.

A caustic soda lake whose seasonal islands host East Africa's only regular lesser flamingo breeding site.

Halophilic algae color the shallows and salt crusts, while the caustic water limits predators around the seasonal islands where lesser flamingos nest.

The final 20 km are rough gravel and temperatures frequently exceed 40°C; lesser flamingos do not breed every year, and nesting areas are sensitive.

One of the world's largest remaining intact animal migrations

More than one million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras follow a roughly 1,000-km loop through Tanzania and Kenya; predators follow the herds.

Exact locations shift by season. Do not buy a fixed fantasy of river crossings.

The world's largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera with dense resident wildlife

Ngorongoro puts steep crater walls, grassland, Lake Magadi and dense resident wildlife into one volcanic caldera.

Crater traffic is a concern and fees stack up: entry, vehicle and crater-service charges apply. Early starts help.

A below-sea-level rift basin with active volcanoes, salt plains and acidic hydrothermal features

The basin combines salt flats, acidic brines, colored hydrothermal deposits and rift volcanoes in a below-sea-level landscape.

Excessive heat, difficult terrain, basic facilities and limited medical options make this a serious trip. FCDO says foreign nationals currently cannot travel to Afar airports; use a recognized tour company with an armed police or military escort and check restrictions before departure.

A walled Islamic town with distinctive Harari townhouses, 82 mosques and 102 shrines

Harar Jugol sits on a plateau in eastern Ethiopia, ringed by deep gorges, desert and savannah. Walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries enclose 82 mosques, 102 shrines and traditional Harari townhouses shaped by African and Islamic traditions.

The Jugol is a living neighborhood with active religious sites. Some places restrict entry, while UNESCO cites urban encroachment and changes to historic buildings as conservation concerns.

Eleven medieval monolithic churches carved top-down from volcanic rock

Workers carved the churches top-down from volcanic rock, then cut the trenches, drainage channels and passages around them.

The churches remain active places of worship. Dress modestly and keep clear of services; current U.S. advice says do not travel to Amhara.

A living Gedeo agroforestry system with sacred forests and megalithic sites

The property lies along the eastern edge of the Main Ethiopian Rift, where mature trees shelter enset, coffee and other crops in a multilayer agroforestry system. Sacred forests and dense clusters of megalithic monuments on the mountain ridges are part of the same Gedeo cultural landscape.

This is an inhabited agroforestry system spread across the escarpment, not a single monument. Sacred forests and megalithic sites remain tied to Gedeo religious practice, while UNESCO describes traditional management and governance as weakened.
